Let All Flourishing Be Mutual A3 Risograph Print

£20.00

A3 2 layer risograph print depicting a mandrake and a hag stone, alongside the phrase "let all flourishing be mutual".

The photographs of the hag stone were taken on a trip to the highest point in the Pyrenees in France. Where I found this large rock with a hole straight through the middle. This, in British folklore, is referred to as a 'hag stone'. Legend has it, that if you pear through the hole with one eye closed, you will see into another world. They also offer protection and healing to whoever finds the stone.

The Mandrake has been used in witchcraft and medicine for centuries. During the medieval period, due to its poisonous nature and use by witches, the use of plant was suppressed by the church and it was labeled as demonic. The Mandrakes anthropomorphic appearance meant that the plant was arbitrarily gendered by western, modern medicine. However, many of these plants are hermaphrodites and can reproduce alone, defying the binary gender categories imposed on to it.

The phrase "let all flourishing be mutual" is from Robin Wall Kimmerer's book, Braiding Sweetgrass. In which they explore Native American traditions and Indigenous knowledge to explore and review our connection with the natural world and how we can change our destructive behaviour to one of harmony and understanding.

I use these symbols to represent the shift that we as humans must take to imagine a new world in which all people are accepted as equals and are living in balance with the world around us.
